MELODIC ARTICULATIONS OF FAITH, LOVE AND HUMANITY.

Wielding an acoustic guitar and soulful vocals, Noel Nderitu is a breath of fresh air to the evolving Kenyan music scene. The talented vocalist has been at it professionally since 2013. He started playing and growing musically since 2007. His first introduction to the world as a solo artist came in the form of an 8-track EP titled ‘My Kind Of Music’, released in the last quarter of 2013. His other album projects include 2017’s ‘The Bridge’ (which debuted at #1 on iTunes Kenya Charts) and 2018’s ‘Undugu EP’, a 5-track collaborative effort with rapper Rigga.

Noel’s latest release is ‘The Love Sessions EP’, a 6 track self-produced project released in March 2019 and featuring guest appearances by Sage and Lisa Oduor-Noah. He is currently involved in the #OsamChallenge, a challenge that sees Noel and 4 other artists release one song every month from August to December. Noel has performed in many countries including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America.

Faith, love, humanity are themes prevalent in his music. Noel believes that Love blossoms when we recognize our humanity and allow faith to anchor our love expressions. The songster has always had songs for different times in his life. “It’s funny how a song can take you back to a specific time in your life so vividly.” He believes that musicians should provide soundtracks to life seasons. “Everything you go through can and should be expressed well via music.”

For Noel, when things don’t make sense, God remains the bedrock that births his inspiration. He knows that his dream project is centered on the idea of a collaboration. His goal is to perform his original music in a theatre with a full orchestra.

Noel likes that he has learned to have the freedom to create without pressure to conform to something that would make his expression counterfeit. However, a huge challenge in his musical journey is the lack of diverse opportunities in the live scene. Sometimes he would want to play an intimate acoustic show but the opportunities available steer him towards a high-energy experience.

“I generally struggle performing where I don’t have control of the parameters that make my set successful like venue choice, gate fee charges, etc.”

There have been many times when the frustration of pursuing a music career has gotten to him and a fan or friend messages him in that period saying how much his music has blessed or inspired them. “One person tweeted me saying that my music inspired them to become a better human and they’d want people to have the same feeling about their work as they do my music. Messages like these give me perspective and inspire me to keep making music.”

Noel advises others on a similar path as his, “Talent alone means nothing. Artists need to creatively express themselves without bias or undue influence- but apply business principles in the marketing/promotion of their product and brand.”
