YOUNG, DYNAMIC AND CREATIVE.

Alvin Wangai Maina is a 17 year old visual artist with an extraordinary vision. Alvin completed his O levels at St Andrews School, Turi,Kenya and is currently pursuing his A level studies at Glenalmond College, Scotland. This young artist holds great pride in the fact that he is a self-taught visual artist and photographer. He got his first camera (a DSLR) when he was about 14 years old and has worked with it ever since.

As a creative introvert who energizes from a state of solitude, his interest in visual arts was sparked when he realized that he could evoke emotions out of people without necessarily engaging with them. This motivated him to push his boundaries on the kind of photography he would settle for. He then began looking up different artists and experimenting with different techniques.

Topics that inspire him are based on sex, melancholy and mental health. His projects and concepts are aimed at giving his opinion on these topics but also reaching out to people who are experiencing issues related to mental health.

Having undergone a period of mental instability with feelings of defeat and depression, he was able through photography and visual art to fill that void.

His work was able to reach and touch other people in similar circumstances.

His main inspiration is drawn from his personal experiences.

He covers subjects such as depression, suicide, sexual assault, family unit, heartache and unrequited love. Notably, all his topics have negative connotations, because instead of just mentioning the problems he has faced, he gives living motivation and testimonies that such incidences are only temporary.

His target audience is mainly people who are hurting, emotionally broken, insecure and are looking for ways to heal. He envisions in the not so distant future, a photo project that follows the growth process of a person who is healing from depression.

This young mind manages to execute brilliant visuals by drawing inspiration from reading fantasy books and looking at the work of other surreal artists. He loves his art because he is able to manipulate images and make unrealistic things look realistic. He creates ‘out of this world’ designs that are highly appreciated due to their unique nature.

Through his journey, Alvin has come across quite a few challenges like the limitations of his equipment and his age.

“I would urge people to first master the little they have before they demand for better things.” he says.  He also reiterates, “To them it doesn’t make sense that I can be this skilled and talented and still so young. This has led me to losing business opportunities.”

This issue initially used to demotivate him but it now acts as encouragement because he is always subconsciously trying to prove wrong everybody who ever looked down on him.

Alvin shares words of wisdom that his mother gave him, “Put in time and effort, the audience and appreciate will come; don’t rush the process”

Alvin throws this out to the universe as food for thought, “Simplicity is the trademark of a genius.”
