Artist Feature: Songa – R.I.P Mapenzi (ft Nyakio)

Songa’s Story: Dance-Soul is the name of his genre which is a fusion of Afro-Soul and HipHop/Rnb. Anthony “Songa” Wasonga was born on 9th August 1992 in Nairobi, Kenya. He learnt how to sing and dance from the age of five by imitating Usher. “I remember growing up everybody had a favorite superhero. Superman and Batman were cool but Usher was my hero.”, Says Songa. He is also heavily influenced by 80s and 90s singers such as Bobby Brown, Prince, Five Alive, and more contemporary artists such as Eric Wainaina, Dwele, Dela and Just A Band (all three who he hopes to work with in the future.)

Songa has performed as an opening act for stars such as Fena, Madtraxx and Avril. He has also rocked the stage as a headliner in major fashion events such as the African Fashion Factory and A La Mode. His electrifying performances have won him a large and growing fan base among university students. The “SongaMeansMove” online dance video campaign has also secured him fans from the uptown high school students, especially teenage girls who adore him for his charming boy-next-door quality. Furthermore the old school sound of his music has also won the hearts of the nostalgic middle aged listeners who recall jamming to New Jack Swing sounds in the late eighties to mid-nineties. His large market reach potential has led to him landing collaborations with corporates such as Converse Kenya and Samsung. He has worked with artists such as Dora, Karun, Harry Kimani and GBO.
